Grommets for cable passages and panel openings.

A grommet fits around a panel opening to provide a finished passage for wiring, tubing or another specified item. Match the groove to the panel and the opening to what must pass through it. Webson can quote a manufacturer part number or a dimensioned requirement.

ComponentWhat it doesWhat to specify
Open grommetsProvide an existing opening through the fitted part.Panel hole, groove width, clear bore and flange dimensions.
Membrane or skinned-over grommetsHave a membrane opened as directed for the installation.Permitted cable range, opening method and specified use.
Split grommetsAllow fitting around an existing item where the design permits.Split arrangement, groove fit and the exact component geometry.
Edge protectionFits a specified panel edge or cutout perimeter.Edge thickness, bend requirements, material and retention method.

Measure where the grommet seats

A loose, worn grommet may not show the original mounting dimensions accurately. Use the panel drawing or measure the finished opening and panel thickness. Include the cable or tube outside diameter and whether a connector must pass through during assembly.

FeatureInformation to sendWhat to check
Panel openingDiameter or complete cutout shape and tolerance.Match the seating groove to the prepared opening.
Panel thicknessThickness at the seating edge.Compare it to the specified groove or panel-thickness range.
Clear openingBore or permitted cable range for the exact style.Check the item that passes through, including any assembly-stage connector.
Flange and projectionOutside dimensions and space on both sides of the panel.Check adjacent parts and available seating area.
MaterialSpecified compound, grade and service conditions.Do not infer temperature or electrical properties from color or softness.

Specify the compound, not just “rubber”

Temperature, oils, cleaning agents and outdoor exposure can affect material selection. Include the required compound or manufacturer designation and any applicable flammability or other documentation. A similar shape in a different material may behave differently in service.

Passage protection, sealing and retention have different requirements

A grommet can separate a cable from a panel edge, but it does not automatically provide strain relief or an environmental seal. If the cable must resist a pull, or the enclosure has a sealing requirement, state that explicitly so the complete arrangement can be checked.

Before you order

Can I select a grommet by outside diameter?

Not reliably. Identify the mounting opening, panel thickness, clear bore and flange dimensions. The outside flange overlaps the panel hole.

Is a grommet interchangeable with a snap bushing?

Compare the drawings and function. Retention, flexibility, panel-thickness range and passage dimensions can differ even when the mounting hole is similar.

Can Webson quote a grommet without a part number?

Send the panel opening and thickness, required passage size, material and dimensions. A drawing is preferable; photos can help identify the style.

Send panel dimensions with the grommet requirement

Include the part number or drawing, quantity and delivery date. Add panel opening, thickness, passage size, material and service conditions. Identify any retention, sealing or documentation requirements.
