// PRODUCT SELECTION
Pins for locating, joining and retention.
Select the pin around the hole and the job it performs. A ground dowel, coiled spring pin and slotted spring pin have different fit and installation requirements. Webson can quote the specified pin from a part number, standard or drawing.

| Component | What it does | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Ground dowel pins | Provide the specified locating or alignment fit. | Diameter tolerance, length, hole fit and end features. |
| Coiled spring pins | Compress according to the selected coiled design and duty. | Exact series, diameter, length and receiving-hole requirements. |
| Slotted spring pins | Use a slotted body that compresses during installation. | Applicable standard, hole range, length and material. |
| Grooved and retaining pins | Use the specified surface or end features for retention. | Complete geometry, engagement and mating-part details. |
Include the hole and engagement details
The pin’s free dimensions and the installed fit are not always the same. Use the selected product’s hole recommendation and the assembly drawing. For alignment, identify where the pin locates each mating part and how it will be retained.

| Feature | Information to send | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter and fit | Nominal size, limits and the receiving-hole dimensions. | Keep clearance and interference requirements explicit. |
| Length | Overall length, tolerances and engagement in each part. | Check projection, bottoming and available support. |
| Ends and surface | Chamfers, radii, grooves, holes or extraction features. | These details affect assembly and service access. |
| Material and duty | Grade, condition, finish and selected pin series. | Preserve the specified design rather than choosing by appearance. |
| Installation and removal | Press access, installation direction and removal method. | Include the assembly sequence and service requirements. |
Keep the fit requirement with the pin designation
Specify material, heat treatment or hardness and finish where controlled. If replacing a pin in an existing hole, include the condition of that hole and the approved replacement requirement. A worn sample alone may not establish the original size or fit.
Locating and retaining are separate requirements
Pins can align components, form pivots or retain parts, depending on the design. Identify which function the assembly calls for. For a change in pin style, compare the hole, loads, installation and service requirements before proposing a substitute.
Before you order
Can a spring pin replace a ground dowel?
Do not assume so. The fit, retention and alignment behavior differ. Use the approved pin family or obtain approval for the change.
Can I identify a pin from its loose diameter?
That measurement can help, but the family, tolerance, free state and mating hole also matter. Send the full designation or drawing if available.
What details help with a custom pin quote?
Diameter and length tolerances, end and retention features, material, finish, quantity and current drawing revision.
Send the pin and mating-hole requirements
Include the complete part number or drawing, quantity, delivery date, pin family, diameter and length. Add hole fit, material, finish, installation and documentation requirements.
