// ELECTRONIC HARDWARE
Precision screws for boards, panels and instruments.
A short screw description can leave out the feature that makes the part fit: a shoulder tolerance, head height or controlled thread length. Webson quotes machine screws, shoulder screws and other electronic fasteners from manufacturer part numbers, standards or drawings.

Choose by the job the screw performs

| Component | What it does | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Machine screws | Join tapped parts or fasten through a clearance hole into a nut. | Thread, head and drive, length, material and finish. |
| Shoulder screws | Provide an unthreaded shoulder for spacing, locating or movement. | Shoulder diameter and length with tolerances, plus the separate thread callout. |
| Set screws | Secure a component through a threaded hole without a projecting head. | Point geometry, overall length, thread and drive access. |
| Drawing-specific screws | Meet a geometry or process requirement beyond a catalog description. | Current drawing revision, controlled features, material and inspection requirements. |
Keep shoulder length, screw length and thread length separate
For many projecting-head screws, length is measured from beneath the head. Countersunk screws commonly use an overall length convention. Shoulder screws have a separate shoulder-length callout. Follow the selected standard or manufacturer drawing rather than transferring one convention to another.

| Feature | Information to send | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Thread | Full size and pitch or threads per inch, class where specified and any locking feature. | Similar-looking inch and metric threads are not substitutes. |
| Length | The drawing’s length callout and tolerance. | Confirm whether the head or projecting feature is included. |
| Shoulder | Diameter, length, tolerances and any relief at the thread transition. | A matching thread does not establish the same shoulder fit. |
| Head and drive | Head diameter and height, drive type and tool access. | Check nearby parts and the space available to install the screw. |
| Material and finish | Grade, coating and any specified processing. | Use the complete requirement, including required documentation. |
Put the tolerance on the drawing
If a shoulder locates a moving part, send the mating bore or fit requirement with the screw drawing. If head height is critical under a cover, show the available envelope. These details help identify a suitable catalog part or establish what a custom supplier must make.
Standard and custom screws in one inquiry
Include standard fasteners and drawing-specific items in the same bill of material. For a standard item, preserve the full designation and required issue. For a custom screw, include revision, quantity and the dimensions or processes that need inspection.
Before you order
Does precision mean a particular tolerance?
No. The term needs a drawing or specification behind it. State the dimensions and tolerances required for the actual part.
Can a machine screw replace a shoulder screw with the same thread?
The shoulder supplies geometry that a fully threaded screw does not. Compare the complete design and obtain approval for any proposed substitution.
Can Webson quote an MS screw?
Yes. Use the Mil-Spec references to identify a published selection, or send the complete designation and required specification issue with your inquiry.
Send the designation or the controlled drawing
Include the full part number or drawing revision, quantity, requested delivery date, material, finish and documentation. Call out any critical dimensions or inspection reports required for acceptance.
