Nut thread, width across flats and height
Schematic only; not to scale. Letter labels are keys for this illustration. Use the applicable part specification for dimensions, tolerances and measurement conventions.
// PART IDENTIFICATION
A low-height nut with a nonmetallic insert
MS21083 identifies low-height self-locking hex nuts with a nonmetallic insert. The insert is a distinct locking construction from an all-metal locknut. Keep the specified material, thread and nut envelope in the requirement.
Do not select an alternate from thread size alone. The assembly’s operating conditions and the controlling drawing determine the acceptable locking design.

Thread and material entries support part identification. These selected records are not the full series, an acceptance drawing or a live inventory feed. Include the required specification issue and documentation with your inquiry.
// PART-NUMBER EXAMPLES
Preserve the material code and size notation
In the selected records, N identifies cadmium-plated steel and C identifies passivated corrosion-resistant steel. MS21083N3 is a 10-32 selection, MS21083N12 is 3/4-16 and MS21083N16 is 1-12. MS21083C08 uses an 8-32 thread.
Keep the complete designation. The 08 and 3 size codes are distinct; they should not be read as ordinary fractions or carried across to a different series.
// FAMILY COMPARISON
Compare the locking style and height
| Item | Reference |
|---|---|
| MS21083 | Low-height, nonmetallic-insert self-locking nut |
| MS21044 | Regular-height self-locking nut family |
| NAS1291 C...M selections | A286 all-metal locknuts with dry-film lubricant |
| NAS671 | Plain small-pattern nut without a self-locking feature |
These are family distinctions, not an approved-alternate list. A low-height envelope and a matching thread do not make different locking mechanisms equivalent.
// STANDARD STATUS
MS21083 and NASM21083
The legacy MS21083 document was canceled on July 19, 2000 and identifies NASM21083 as its successor. Keep the part designation and standard issue required by your drawing when requesting a quote. Document succession alone does not authorize a part substitution.
