// PRODUCT SELECTION

Washers for bearing surfaces, spacing and specified locking systems.

Washer selection starts with the function the joint needs. A bearing washer, a controlled-thickness shim and a locking washer are different requirements. Send Webson the complete designation or drawing with the material, finish and quantity.

ComponentWhat it doesWhat to specify
Flat washersProvide the specified bearing surface under a head or nut.Bore, outside diameter, thickness and material requirements.
Shim washersSet a controlled axial distance or clearance.Thickness tolerance, flatness and the complete profile.
Specified locking washersForm part of the locking arrangement required by the design.Exact system, installation orientation and permitted mating surfaces.
Shoulder and insulating washersCover a bearing face and, for shoulder styles, part of a hole.Bore, flange, shoulder dimensions and material grade.

Define all three primary washer dimensions

Inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness identify the basic envelope. A nominal screw-size label does not state every one of those values. For a shim, the tolerance on thickness may be as important as the nominal thickness.

Inside diameterBore and tolerance or the complete standard designation.Check the mating shank, shoulder or threaded feature.
Outside diameterOverall bearing diameter and profile.Check seating area and nearby features.
ThicknessNominal thickness and limits.Include it in the joint stack and available screw engagement.
Material and conditionGrade, hardness, heat treatment and finish where required.Match the approved bearing and environmental requirements.
Special featuresCountersink, teeth, locking geometry or shoulder.Use the exact drawing and installation instructions.

Do not infer performance from the name

“Lock washer” is not a complete specification. Identify the actual product or standard and the approved installation arrangement. For bearing washers, include any hardness requirement. For insulating components, specify the resin or compound and required documentation.

Keep washer details on the purchase list

Washer substitutions can change the stack height, bearing area or contact material even when the screw still passes through the hole. List the specified washer with its mating fasteners, and identify whether alternatives may be proposed for approval.

Before you order

Can I order by screw size alone?

Use the complete washer designation where possible. Bore, outside diameter, thickness and material can vary for the same nominal screw size.

Is a shim washer the same as a general flat washer?

A shim is selected for controlled spacing and may have tighter dimensional requirements. Compare the actual drawing and tolerances.

Can any washer replace a specified locking system?

No. Preserve the system and installation requirements unless the design authority approves a change.

Include dimensions and material controls

Send the standard designation or drawing revision, quantity, delivery date, bore, outside diameter and thickness. Add material, hardness, finish and required inspection documents.
