StyleWhere it is usedWhat to identify
Round sleeve spacersSeparation and support around a through-fastener in PCB, panel and chassis assemblies.Bore clearance, outside diameter, length and bearing surfaces.
Hex-body spacersAssemblies calling for an external hex profile.Across-flats dimension, bore and length; do not infer a threaded bore from the body shape.
Retaining spacersAssemblies requiring a spacer to remain on a specified screw during handling.Compatible screw, retention feature and installation method from the manufacturer drawing.
Custom spacers and sleevesStepped, unusual or drawing-specific dimensions and material requirements.Current drawing revision, complete geometry, tolerances and production quantity.

How to specify spacers

Schematic of a sleeve spacer showing face-to-face length L, outside diameter OD and inside diameter ID.
L = face-to-face length; OD = outside diameter; ID = inside diameter (bore). The end view is enlarged for clarity. Schematic only; not to scale. Use the specified part drawing for dimensions and tolerances.

Use the part drawing to define the full geometry. A screw’s nominal thread size is not the same as a spacer’s bore diameter; specify the required clearance rather than assuming those dimensions match.

FeatureHow to describe itWhy it matters
Length LFace-to-face distance between the spacer’s bearing ends, with tolerance.Establishes separation in the assembly; check mating surfaces and stack tolerances.
Inside diameter IDThrough-bore size and tolerance, plus any steps or counterbores.Must fit the mating fastener or shaft with the required clearance.
Outside profileOutside diameter for a round body, or across-flats dimension for a hex body.Controls the envelope, mounting-hole clearance and bearing area.
End and surface detailsFlatness, chamfers, surface finish and other specified features. Can affect seating and contact with the board, panel or adjoining component.

Material and finish options

Specify the actual material grade and finish required by the part or assembly. The following are selection considerations, not performance ratings or a list of stocked sizes.

Material familySelection considerationsDetails to specify
AluminumA metal option where component weight matters.Alloy, finish and any electrical contact requirements.
BrassUsed in machined hardware; may be specified with a plated finish.Grade, finish and coating requirements.
Stainless steelA metal option for assemblies with specified corrosion or environmental requirements.Grade, passivation or other finish, and mating materials.
Nylon and other plasticsOptions for assemblies requiring nonmetallic components.Exact resin, temperature range, mechanical loads and any required flammability or electrical ratings.

For insulating applications, review the complete electrical and environmental requirements. For conductive connections, identify the required contact surfaces and coating. Sourcing options depend on the individual part.

PCB, panel and chassis applications

Spacers support PCB mounting, separate chassis panels and establish offsets in instruments and equipment enclosures. Check the required bearing area and assembly loads, particularly where a spacer contacts a circuit board. Electrical isolation or grounding depends on the complete assembly, including fasteners and finishes.

For repeat production requirements, vendor-managed inventory and custom kitting can be reviewed against your bill of material and release schedule.

Questions before ordering

What is the difference between a spacer and a standoff?

A plain sleeve spacer has an unthreaded bore and is commonly used around a through-fastener. A threaded standoff provides one or more threaded attachment ends. Catalog terminology can vary, so specify the bore or thread and end configuration.

Can I specify a spacer by screw size alone?

No. Provide the bore diameter or manufacturer part number along with length, outside diameter, material and finish. The mating screw size alone does not define the required clearance or body dimensions.

Can Webson quote nylon and metal spacers?

Webson can review nylon, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and other specified spacer requirements. Material, finish, quantity and part dimensions determine sourcing options and availability.

Can you review custom spacer lengths or bores?

Yes. Send the current drawing with dimensions, tolerances, material, finish, quantity and requested delivery date. Webson coordinates made-to-print sourcing through manufacturing partners.
